Change of run location

Hey guys,

We have changed this Sunday's run to Warminster Park instead of Play Wicki Farm. It is on 300 Veterans Way on the old Naval base in Warminister. The other area is not going to work right now because we are not very sure of the trails behind the farm. Hope to see you there!!!!!

Icy Tyler Park

Hello everyone,

The general consensus is that Tyler park will still be snow covered and icy for our Sunday morning run. Some people are going to meet up at Playwicki farm. It is located in Feasterville/Langhorne on Bridgetown Pike. The entire loop is 3.2 miles, so we will most likely run it twice. We are planning to meet at our usual time 9:00 am. Hope to see some familiar faces!!!!

Workouts for Weeks 5 & 6 will be posted tomorrow morning!

Hello! I know the snow is supposed to start soon, but I was wondering if anyone was running today after school or Thursday?
Have a great day!

The Church of St. Stans

Sunday mornings are turning into quite the event...

We have been doing a considerable amount of praying...that we don't get frostbite, that we make it up that hill (without slipping on the ice!), or have enough steam to make it that last mile! Along with these cold temperatures, I look forward to my Sunday morning fellowship and without a doubt would not be nearly as productive if I were doing this alone. Believe me when I say that the cold seems to disappear a short way into the runs.

Today we met up for a run along Forbidden Drive...I wish I had my camera for the actual run, as we came across a beautiful scenery...even a covered bridge! It was simply gorgeous today! I had no idea what the temperature was (18 degrees) until I got there (after taking myself in the wrong direction twice). The run was mostly on some packed snow with a couple of really slick areas, but it surprisingly wasn't too difficult to run on. There were actually quite a few runners, walkers and bikers. We accomplished 6 miles...slightly slower than the usual pace...but still at a respectable clip.
I know Bruce is watching down on us, signs of such seem to present themselves on a semi-regular basis. And believe me when I say he is cheering us all on...in between his bouts of laughter! So strap on your Sunday best running shoes and that UnderArmour and join us...all are welcome!
May seems so far away, but it will be here in no time, along with some much better weather!
A couple of our supporters that were waiting for us at the finish.

Sunday's crew...great job ladies!

If you look closely, you will see the ice in Joanne's hair!

Cold and stuff

Hello everyone,

I was just thinking after my 9 AM 5-miler in Tyler w/ Mark and Fiona that 19 degrees is really cold. In fact, January has been a real cold month. To the point of one concession to long pants. In fact my last three runs at 19,35, and 22 degrees when put together = a nice 76 degree late Spring run.

My point is, that all of you new, somewhat new, or getting back to it runners are really impressing me. This is pretty tough stuff and probably about the most difficult time of the year to do this. So to Joanne, and Lisa, Wendy, Heather, Karin, Betsy, Cindy and all of you others who are getting out there in 20 degree weather with regularity, it's only going to get better.

You know me, I'm just looking forward to those warm spring runs where we all take our shirts off and change post run, not just me. No excuses then.

Back at it Tuesday.

Get in GEAR !!!

Team,

I got a great deal through Brooks Running Company for our official team race shirts. They are White moisture wicking material (very nice). In order to take advantage of this great deal, we need to get sizes in PRONTO! I need all sizes by next Wednesday, January 28th ( as I will be placing order on Thursday Jan 29th). The deal we are proposing is if you fundraise/donate $100, the shirt is yours for free. If you do not fundraise or if a family member would wish to have a race shirt, it will be $23.00.

PLEASE NOTE: We will also be getting Large Cotton Shirts with our Team Logo on them for team supporters who may not be doing the race but want to be a part of this great cause. These cotton tee's will be going for $18.00. PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT PAY FOR COTTON TEE'S UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE (STILL GOING OVER DETAILS).

The shirts will take about 2 weeks to be delivered and then will take a couple of weeks ( I am guessing) to get screen printed. Either way, these will be ready well before race day!

Shoot an Email to our new team email at teamstans@yahoo.com and include:
First/Last Name; Shirt size(XS, S, M, L, XL) and quantity.

Speed or Distance a Priority?

For the past week or so I've been maintaining about a 14-minute mile (not great, I know, but good for me just getting started). I did three miles tonight in 42 minutes (all treadmill - I HATE the cold weather!) - my question is - should I be happy with the 14-minute pace and work on adding to the distance, or should I work on getting to a 13-minute mile, then 12, etc - just not sure what my focus should be....... hopefully some of you more experienced runners can help this newbie out!!! Thanks everyone :-)

Snowy Sunday Along The River

How gorgeous and peaceful everything was this morning when I woke up to find a little more than a dusting of snow. Somehow I managed to get myself together and drove over the Washington Crossing Bridge. I was laughing while driving along River Road, as all of a sudden, I go around a bend and right in front of me were endless amounts of glacier-hopeful chunks of ice floating along the river. It was a nice distraction from the mammoth estates that I was driving by!

It ended up being Joe and I...we did about 6.5 along the Towpath. No ice on the trail to worry about this time and on some parts the snow felt like we were running on the beach (wishful thinking??). It was a great way to spend an hour. Thanks, Joe, for running probably what you considered to be a snail's pace!

Pictures are included...I almost always have my camera. No people this week...sorry Tom!

Cold and now snow

Hi Friends,

Ran 4 yesterday at 11 AM. 13 degrees. My usual partner wisely chose not too so I was solo. Not as bad as I thought. I did make two concessions however, a hat and long pants. Also, credit to my lovely wife, Mariann as she walked about 3 as I was running. Man her face was red.

Supposed to do 7 w/ Fiona at 9:30 this morning. MK has already bailed as he's a bit under the weather. We may have to adjust where and distance as time as I know the towpath holds snow for a long time. I know a good snow route from Washington's Crossing, PA across the bridge and through Titusville, NJ. We'll figure it out.

If anyone's interested, a bunch of my friends etc. are watching the Eagles game at Isaac's today. We're also going to do some sort of Eagles tribute at Bruce's grave before we head down. We'll try to keep it tasteful.

Have fun and go Eagles, thanks MLK (not for being assassinated, but for the day) and go Obama!

How far are we going?

That seems to be the question! Here are directions for the distance recording tool posted by Joe:

Go to gmap-pedometer.com

Type in your zip code (top right) where it says "jump to" and hit enter

Then click "hybrid" also top right to show an accurate aerial view of your area

Zoom in using the "+" sign on the left of the picture to find the streets you want (you can click and drag to move the picture around)

Once you locate your starting point, click the "start recording" button on the left and then double-click on the map... a red balloon will appear... continue to double click along your route... mile markers will appear along the route and the distance is also calculated along the left...

You'll be able to map routes any where you want and know exactly how far you're going. I hope these directions were helpful.

Remember... you can always use the blog to find exercise partners for days, times, and ability levels that meet your needs. It was great seeing everyone out there yesterday. Stay warm the next few days. We are planning to run in Tyler Park after school tomorrow @ 3:00 with the hope the trees will block the frigid wind. Bruce, are we committed (or crazy) or what???

All I have to say is Nice Job!!!!

6 miles Baby!

What a great morning it was for a run along "the drive". It was 34 degrees and slick in a handful of spots, but otherwise, no issues. We started out at 9:15 went down Kelly Drive and around past the Art Museum. We got a little bit further before we found that it was just too icy, so made that our turn around point. We accomplished the distance in about an hour.

When I got home, I used the US Track & Field site that Mike had posted (using the very cool aerial view) and found that our run came to 5.9 miles. I have to say that I am more than pleased with that, as I have only be averaging a 2-3 mile run twice a week. Certainly the company and the downtown atmosphere helped me along! My only hope is that I can make it up the steps at school tomorrow!

Great job Ladies and thanks for a fun morning. Next time, let's grab coffee and a bagel afterward! Here's a shot of us post-run...still smiling!

Way to go TEAM STANS!

You all made me proud ( I was proud of myself too) braving the elements yesterday. The wind was fierce! It took me an hour to thaw out. I just kept thinking how nice it will be running in March and April and how fit I will be. Despite the cold I felt great last night! I've decided to buy some Aquaphor for my skin (especially my face) to combat dryness and chafing from the wind and cold. It's great stuff... not as thick as vaseline and nonirritating... it provides a great protective barrier. You can but it at any drug store. (It's also great for preventing diaper rash, mommies).

I hope the snow holds off so we can get our long run in Sunday (6 miles for me) down on Kelly Drive. I plan on showing even with an inch on the ground. Any more than that, it's another treadmill day. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Hi Everyone
I was really looking forward to meeting everyone today but as luck would have it I ended up going home sick! I was hoping to find some running partners so if you still need someone let me know. I am going to start out in Group B, and would be interested in running right after school. I am at North so I could get to South or Tyler on the scheduled days. Let me know what you all decided I will be needing some motivation to get started with this schedule :)

Not as crazy as I thought, or am I...

So, last night was cold and rainy. By time I got home and we made the kids diner I just didn't want to do the walk/cross-training. I start to think maybe I'm not so crazy after all.
Tonight I stopped at South's gym on the way home (about 5:45) for my speed workout on the indoor track (again not crazy). This is the first I've really been on that track and found it's 1/8 mile long and a comfortable surface to run on. I get half a mile into the speed part of the work out when I'm asked to leave the track. This is when found out they don't let people on the track while there are games in the main gym. Fine, I put on my sweatshirt, pack my bags, and leave without a problem. Great now I have two workouts to make up for..... Surprisingly, when you run a few miles it's not that cold outside and there was plenty of light from the moon and the lights in the parking lot: I did my workout on the outside track! Normally running outside I would have long Under Armor pants on, but I didn't plan on running outside, so I just had Under Armor shorts with mesh shorts over that. Yep, I'm convinced I really am crazy!

On another note, my family and I go to church on Sunday mornings at 9:00, so I won't be joining you on Kelly Drive this Sunday. I'll probably go out early Saturday morning instead. I live about a mile from South and will stay local (no route planned yet). If anybody needs a running partner and would like to join me you are more than welcome. Any route suggestions?

Hey all,
Don't let a little ice get you discouraged!!! Ran on the treadmill tonight. It is better than nothing. It looks like Thursday will be the day. Have a great night and stay warm and dry.

And so it begins, let's see how long it lasts...

I'm starting on the Group C regimen because I know I can do it and it will push me in the speed training excercises. Well, the rain died down to a light drizzle and there wasn't really any ice at my house, so I went out to run my two miles. I don't get home until about 5:30, which means it was rather dark, but I carried the light from my bicycle with me. I learned two things today: one, I think it will take a while to learn how to pace myself and, two, I'm starting to realize just how crazy I am about doing this. Let's see if I'm still having fun in a month or so when its 15 degrees out!
The ice is officially falling from the sky at this hour. We will have our offical kick-off run/walk and team photo on Thursday @ 3:00 PM. Please gather at South's IA parking lot (auditorium end). Plan on covering 2-4 miles. Please don't let today's weather keep you from walking/running the indoor track or treadmill.

Our long run location schedule will be posted tomorrow; so, check back.

Monday, January 5, 2009

Um... light precip will be moving in the area tomorrow late in the afternoon (figures)... I plan on bringing my sneakers and acting as if... If it's just too nasty and dangerous, Joe or I will post here with a cancellation notice. Our "snow date" will be Thursday for our team photo and kickoff run/walk. Same time and place. I'm guessing the indoor track at South or your treadmill will help you stick with the program. That's my backup plan. I can't help but think Bruce is looking down on all of us having a good laugh, thinking why didn't we just plan a fishing trip in June... Oh well, I hope to see everyone tomorrow. I'm really excited about this : )

Welcome Back!

Hey team,
I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break and a Happy New Year! Our training regiments are all updated on the Team Stans Training Center link (on the top right hand side of main page on our blog). There are 4 different groups you can choose from (depending on fitness level, or what your goal is). Please play on the side of caution (at least in the beginning weeks) in what group you choose... In other words, if you are not sure if you are ready to be in the Advanced group C level but you know you can start out well in the Intermediate, Follow the Intermediate Plan! It is always better to be able to move up a group in week 4- if you are feeling like it is too easy, instead of pushing yourself to sickness or injury.
Also, the times/paces that I have down for the plans are just a guideline. If you are in that group, you should be able to hit around that pace for your runs/workouts. At the same time, do not worry about the pace as much on a long run because that is a day you want to determine your run on "how you feel"... if I am feeling good, i will be hitting that prescribed pace effort, If I am feeling lethargic, I may need to take it slower. The sooner you can learn your body in this way, the better off you will be!
Please note that we will be meeting as a group tomorrow in the Industrial Arts parking lot at 3:00pm for a team photo for the yearbook! I hope we can get many out for this. After the photo, members will be getting their first workout in, so dress to Walk/run!

See you tomorrow!
Joe

Long Run Schedule

Hey Everyone! Week one of training is here. Like you, I'm feeling pretty good about this program. I'm hoping to shed those last "10-15" baby pounds! Having all of this support is keeping me motivated. I don't know if I can adhere to the pace times suggested right now (I'm not a "C" but not a "B"... I'm in between... a comfortable 10.5 per mile pace). I will adjust accordingly and push myself little by little...

Joe and I have worked on the long run locatation schedule and will post it shortly; so, if you want company on Sundays, someone from TEAM STANS will be at that location to help pass the miles (not to mention motivate you to get out of bed and stick to your commitment). Long Runs will get going at 9:00 AM. Check back soon for the schedule. It will be here before next Sunday... and hopefully we can all look forward to chatting about another EAGLES game : ) Go Birds!

Saturday, January 3, 2009

I'm with ya Mike! I typically run whenever I feel like it/whenever I have the time. Yesterday I went out and headed in no particualr direction. It ended up being 3.2 miles (yes, the .2 is important!). It was 27 degrees out and I actually felt pretty good. I didn't get out today, but tomorrow plan on doing a bigger loop, about 4+ miles. I have to admit, I am anxious about Broad Street...not about the distance, but moreso about being able to handle the masses of people in an unfamiliar situation. I've coached for 12 years and have run since I have been in 7th grade. I have to remind myself to follow what I have always coached my girls to do...hopefully my habits will also improve!

This time I think I'll try to do it right!

I woke up this morning, the sun was rising and the temperatures haven't made it up to the freezing point yet. Obviously it was the perfect time to start running again!
I used a tool on the USA Track and Field website to map out my route (http://www.usatf.org/routes/map/) and went out for a three mile run. I was a little stiff when I got back, but recovered quickly. Sadly, this sums up how I run; on a whim, for a random distance, at whatever pace I feel like. It's worked so far to get me down 10 miles of Broad Street amoung thousands of people, but this year I think I'll do it the right way. It will be a new experience for me to follow an actual training regimen and I'm looking forward to improving. Who knows, maybe doing some real training will put me in a position to try the PDR (Philadelphia Distance Run) again.
